Nonfiction Book Awards

You may have used NoveList, a searchable free database for readers to learn more about fiction books and authors.

This is a fine service, but what if you have a particular penchant for non-fiction reading?

Book awards from a variety of organizations provide the discerning reader with new choices and ideas. Here are some of the major awards which also include categories for nonfiction works:

The American Book Awards aim to encourage diversity in American writing by recognizing contemporary American authors, without restriction to race, sex, ethnic background or genre.

The Audie Awards are given annually by the Audio Publishers Association, and recognize achievement in the area of audio books. Past winners include "Charles Kuralt's America" and "Jumanji."

The Black Caucus of the American Library Association Literary Awards recognizes outstanding works of fiction and non-fiction by African- American authors.

The Boston Book Review Literary Award consists of the Fisk Fiction Prize, the Rea Non-Fiction Prize and the Bingham Poetry Prize.

The Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize aims to promote books that will contribute to greater understanding and cooperation among the peoples and nations of the Pacific Rim.

The Lannan Literary Award recognizes both new and established writers of the highest caliber. It is sponsored by the Lannan Foundation, dedicated to promoting cultural freedom, diversity and creativity.

The Massachusetts Book Awards are presented each year by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. To be eligible, books must have been written by authors who currently live and work in Massachusetts or must present topics of particular and specific importance to the Commonwealth regardless of their author's residency.

One of the nation's most prestigious literary prizes, the National Book Award is given by the National Book Foundation.

The National Book Critics Circle Award annually recognizes books in five categories: fiction, general nonfiction, biography/autobiography, poetry and criticism.

Pulitzer Prizes have recognized the best in journalism, letters, drama and music and many consider it the most prestigious award a journalist or author can achieve.

The annually awarded Robert F. Kennedy Book Award is given to the book that best represents the values RFK stood for: "concern for the poor and the powerless, his struggle for honest and even-handed justice, his conviction that a decent society must assure all young people a fair chance, and his faith that a free democracy can act to remedy disparities of power and opportunity."
