Easton author Lori Hein-Belanger will read from her book, Ribbons of Highway: A Mother-Child Journey Across America, and show slides from the 12,000 mile back road odyssey that the globetrotting writer took with her children, Adam and Dana Belanger of Easton, after September 11th.

Easton residents may reserve passes for several area museums. These passes are made available through the generosity of the Easton Lion’s Club, Friends of the Library, and other donors. Please call or stop by either the Main Library or Branch to reserve your passes in advance, or make an online reservation by clicking HERE.

National Women's History Month Celebrating American Women

Each March is a celebration of the accomplishments of women throughout American history.

Links

The National Women's History Project (NWHP) recognizes and celebrates the diverse and historic accomplishments of women by providing information, educational materials and programs.

History.com is affiliated with the A&E televison channel, and currently includes a feature in honor of Women's History Month.

In 1969, a group of women and men of Seneca Falls created the National Women's Hall of Fame, believing that the contribution of American women deserved a permanent home in the small village where it all began.

Monday, March 19th, at 8PM
Wayne Potash, Singer and songwriter entertains and discusses his music, work with young children, and sources of his inspiration.

Reference Books Valuable and Unique Resources

Although libraries such as ours are embracing a wide variety of online databases and resources, we will continue to offer both print and electronic resources for many years to come.

Printed reference books contain facts compiled from many sources and are organized for quick and easy use. They include encyclopedias; dictionaries; yearbooks; almanacs and handbooks; biographies; atlases; and indexes.

Below is a small sampling of unique and sometimes unusual reference books available at the Library.

History of the Internet: a Chronology, 1843 to the Present. This book provides historical background of the various developments which led to the Internet as we know it today. R 004.678 HIST

Gale Encyclopedia of the Unusual and Unexplained by Brad Steiger. This source will satisfy the interest among students for information on topics relating to magic, witchcraft, the supernatural and other mysterious phenomena. R 130.3 STEI 2003

The Encyclopedia of Science and Religion addresses the interactions, contradictions, and tensions between science and religion, both historically and in contemporary life. R 291.175 ENCY

How to be a Perfect Stranger: the Essential Religious Etiquette Handbook . A handy source when you are about to attend an unfamiliar wedding or other life-cycle event within a faith, or if you are simply going to be a guest at a particular religion's worship service.

Encyclopedia of Money, by Larry Allen. Alphabetically arranged entries cover the many forms that money has assumed throughout history and people's attitudes about money. Did you know (probably not..) that large stone wheels called fei serve as currency on the island of Yap? R 332.403 ALLEN 1999

The Value of a Dollar: Prices and Incomes in the United States. Theater Tickets in 1877 would cost somewhere in the range of $.40 to $1.50. This is a book about what things have cost, and how much money people have have made in order to buy them. R 338.52 DERKS 1999

Failed Technology: True Stories of Technological Disaster. Entries include the Ford Pinto, Hindenburg, Love Canal, MGM Grand Hotel Fire, Three Mile Island reactor, and of course, the infamous Titanic. JUV REF 620.20 FREI

CD's, Superglue, and Salsa: How Everyday Products are Made, provides information on the invention, manufacturing, and future uses of thirty common high-interest products. JUV REF 670 CDS. Also see How Products are Made: an Illustrated Guide to Product Manufacturing. R 670 HOW (1994-02 7 vols.)

The Rough Guide to Cult Fiction. Wikipedia defines cult fiction as "books that tend to attract a cult following including banned books, transgressive fiction, controversial books, erotic literature and genre fiction." You can find lists of these books here. R823.009 ROUGH 2005

Great Misadventures: Bad Ideas That Led to Big Disasters , by Peggy Saari. Tells of adventures gone wrong, such as Alexander the Great's trek across the Gedrosia Desert that cost the lives of hundreds of men, women and children or the fatal attempts to climb Mount Everest in 1996. Susan B. Anthony Slept Here: A Guide to American Women's Landmarks, by Lynn Sherr. A travel guide through towns, cities, and states, packed with facts about the role women have played in shaping U.S. history. R 973.082 SHERR
